‘Living is easy with eyes closed’ – John Lennon

This project was pulled together from various different aspects, aspects in which over the course of this module and over the last few years I have grown to become passionate about. The first is photography and as a Media Production student, it is probably one of my strongest areas. Initially I didn’t want to undertake a photography project as I wanted a challenge; to test my skills and my creative and the result of this is After She Left. A film that utilises photography stills but is ultimately still a film. At University, I have never undertaken or taken part in a Professional film, I have mainly focused on Photography and Radio Broadcast and therefore I am failing outside of my comfort zone. I knew about the process of film-making of course, but have never actually put it to practise. My personal aims for this project were to do so and identify my position within the film Industry.

We wanted to create a larger body of work that supported the film which included Posters, a graphic novel, photographic prints and website. He have been true to this with the exception of the prints and have a create a body that is consistent with on another and has enables to branch off into the realms of photo editing/manipulation and web design, not just photography and moving image.

The research and Pre-Production stages of this process have evidently been the longest and has revealed another aspect in which I enjoy. I have never really paid much attention to Film Noir prior to this module and it has probably become one of my favourite film genres. The cinematography, the use of lighting to create shadows and highlights and the hard-boiled has revolutionised the way I think creatively and has enabled me to try something different within the realms of photography. Thanks to Luke Ryder, I was introduced to part of photography, underexposing shots whilst lighting them (I’ll get to this in detail later.) Thanks to this research, I have been able to broaden my creative horizons.

The beginning of Pre-Production also proved to be a very creative process. The inspirational photographs and films I have seen as well as the books I have read really drove me to write a cracking story. I constantly found myself referring to as many film noir texts as possible in order to do the genre and my film justice. Not just film noir texts but I found I was pulling things from everywhere. I found that I was borrowing ideas from songs and the themes they convey. I used to be so narrow-minded with regards to ideas; by simply opening myself to new things my creative input has increased tenfold.

Although there was all this creativeness and inspiration flying around it had to end at some point and this brings me to the title of this evaluation, Living is easy with eyes closed. DeeJay and I both assumed that everything was going to go swimmingly and that was our downfall. Once we got to the auditioning stages and sorting out locations it went downhill. Our casting calls went out far too late and as a result we suffered. Due to the time scale of this project we wanted to get actors and start shooting straight away so the casting call period was very short and as a result we had a small pool of actors to choose from. This resulted in us only auditioning two actors which was nowhere near enough. DeeJay’s decision to use friends as actors wasn’t a wise choice either. It may have been easier on us but ultimately it would affect the film because it has that student vibe.

Without being too critical of DeeJay his attitude was ‘let’s do it later’ and as a result things backed up and time was short. This may have been his fault but it was also mine for not pushing to get things done sooner. As I have said, we were too relaxed about the whole thing; we thought it would be easy as this is the worse attribute to have. Hindsight is a wonderful thing because I now know I will never do this again. In all stages of production, I have been mega stressed out about the status of the film, especially with regards to not having locations sorted and whether or not it will be completed on time. I bucked my ideas up during production in order to get things sorted as I came to realise that everything needs to be done well in advance in order to ensure things to flow fluidly and efficient. It didn’t help that we didn’t have a definitive schedule to adhere and this is a major contribution as to why we were so unorganised. Pre-production was considered a little too boring by the pair of us which again is the wrong attitude to take. We were all too eager to start production without doing the important stuff first.

During production was probably where I was most comfortable (other than at the research and at the beginning of pre-production) as I was able to put those creative juices to use and produce a selection of high quality photographs. I also noticed that I thrive under the pressure. Filming presents a time scale in which shots need to be complete by specific times. I felt that I efficiently organised my time and was also vigilant to the time we had left. I never rushed my shots either, wanting to produce the best pictures possible. This stage also furthered my skills as a photographer. Due to the style of shot we were creating I had to give careful consideration to ISO, Shutter Speeds and Aperture and as a result have learnt a thing or two.

Post Production has been where I have been the most stressed but yet again I thrived under the pressure. I spent 34 hours editing the film, spending the majority of two days getting it sorted. I loved getting up early and going to bed late because it was bringing me that much closer to completing the film. Using Premier Pro made it that much more easier but unfortunately is a disappointing choice of editing software as it is not industry standard. I encountered little problems which enable me to fly through the edit. Ultimately I did make so spelling mistakes but these weren’t too much of a problem to replace.

Nevertheless, this process has made me realise what people will do when they are passionate about what they were doing. You can say the passion was somewhat lacking during the vast part of pre-production as it was not what we’re used. DeeJay and I are practical people; we like to get behind the camera and this project has proved that neither of us would make it as a producer.

The film as a final product is not as I originally has envisaged. I am annoyed at DeeJay’s insistence at using friends as it gives the film a student feel which is not what I wanted. I don’t blame him for that, it’s my own fault too and as I keep stating, hindsight is a wonderful thing. Nevertheless I am pleased with the outcome of the film. Although it’s not how I imagined it to be it does do one thing and that is set out to do what we originally wanted to do; change the style in which graphic novels are presented in format of film. As far as I am aware, we are the only ones to have done so. The film also makes for a great graphic novel.

The downfall of this project perhaps laid within the delegations of roles. As Script Writer, Producer, Cinematographer, Director and Editor, it was probably to many roles to take on and to summarise, I think our project was a little too much for two people to handle, especially when you consider that neither of us has undertaken a project like it before. We bit of more than we could chew and we were evidently unprepared for what lay ahead. It would have been far more suitable in we had a larger crew to work with us and it probably would have been easier on me.

Good things have come from this project though. My thought process and creativeness has changed drastically and ideas often come to me thanks to the slightest of things. I have also broadened my photographic eye as well as areas of photography I had never explored. All these things have inspired me and are driving me to do new things every day. I also find that I want to be part of a vast number of projects in order to but my skills to use.

Every stage is as important as the next and thanks to some of the failures and misgivings that we have had, I now realise this. If I had a time machine I know what I would go back in time and change and in future I will make sure that I never make the same mistakes twice. I will take so much away from this project and is a steep learning curve. The one thing I regret is that I have never previously experience a professional project on this scale before. Perhaps if I had undertaken the Video Production module, my attitude to this module would have changed radically.

One final note before I sign off, I enjoyed this project because it has made me realise what I need to do and has given me a slap in the face as to how I need to handle myself in the future. I would love to remake this film, to give it another shot in order for it to become what it should have been.

Other than our film, DeeJay and I wanted to create a larger body of work that fits in with film. We wanted to produce a film poster, photographic prints, a graphic novel and a website; all of which will be present as an installation piece at the degree show. (See Body of Work Post http://cattlec.wordpress.com/2010/01/22/body-of-work/)

If you look at our final artefact(s) you it is clearly evident that we have stuck to our original proposal; not much has changed. The only thing missing is the photography prints and this is down to leaving little time to print them as well as the ‘weird’ quality of prints that I did manage to get printed. I am annoyed at this and it is partly my fault that the prints were done sooner. However I don’t think this affects the body of work we have produced. A film poster, a graphic novel and a website that are all consistent with the Film and is a substantial and relevant body to have. The prints would have been the icing on the cake and for the Degree Show I personally will ensure that it is done and well in advance.

Looking forward to the Degree show, I want to increase the body of work that we have. In order to set the mood I want to create some ‘Confidential Files’ in each character that in appearance are essentially Police Reports. People will be able to read these and get an insight into the characters back story.

At the end of March, I was contacted by the Santa Barbara One Minute Film Festival who wanted me to submit my Memory piece in last terms module. I didn’t think there was anything special about this artefact but it appears I was proved wrong. My artefact was accepted and I find out on the first of May if I win. I’ll keep you up-dated. This has therefore boosted my confidence with regards to submitting my films.

I would like to screen the film at a film festival but at this current stage, I’m not entirely sure I am prepared to do so. The audio especially dialogue needs to be recorded with professional voice actors to give it a more authentic feel and sound. In some cases the correct emotion isn’t behind the audio and it doesn’t really work. Therefore my aim for the next couple of months is to replace the audio and prepare it for any potential film festivals.

In preparation for this, I have done some research into upcoming film festivals.

As stated in an earlier blog post, I have spent the last week trying to get the Photography prints sorted at out at Staples with little success and the ones produced at the Graham Sutherland are quite frankly awful. (See Photography Prints post.) I returned to Staples today in order to get the Graphic Novel produced. I have left it a little late because I have been fairly busy this week and I merely forgot to do it. However, Staples were able to open a 115mb PDF file which I was highly surprised about and actually print it but in all this excitement there is disappointment. I may have been able to actually get my Graphic Novel printed but the quality is….er….terrible. It’s sort of grainy and some of the images are far too dark for my liking and I can assure you it looks nothing like that on the PDF. I blame the fact that the pictures were in JPEG format. Had it been TIFF perhaps it would have been a different story because the quality is better.

Despite this problem I think it is in some way appealing. To me it appears like a vintage pulp fiction (not the film), grainy pictures that look coffee stained. It’s not what I want but I suppose it’s ok. It’s too late to change it now anyway, the hand in is tomorrow.

For the website, DeeJay wanted to create it because he has had experience creating websites before. I wanted to allow him to do this alone because I have feel that I am taking over with this project, especially with regards to the storyboards and shooting the film as it has been predominantly me. As this is a joint project, I think in order to balance it out, giving DeeJay his own creative freedom is probably best. I know what he is capable and I trust him to come up with a consistent and professional design that works.

He stated that he would have a rough basis created by the 6th April but by the 26th he still had only created the front page which was a little frustrating as we had as little as four days left to submit the project. As we are partners, I probably should have given a kick up the ass but I didn’t want to rush anything out of him as it could have been crap. However by the end of today he has completed a fully working website in which we have our own domain name for the next two years.

The design remains consistent with our other promotional outlets (poster and DVD cover), utilising the same objects, colour schemes and font styles which is exactly what the website needed to be. In its current state the website is missing a trailer and few other things but once a trailer has been created it will be immediately uploaded. Overall, I am pleased with what he has created and glad I didn’t bitch about it not being complete because this may have had a negative aspect on the website, our work ethic and potential our own friendship which I hope would never be the case.

Browse through the site at your own pleasure.

My only thoughts as to getting a soundtrack laid down is with 3rd year music tech students but for an early stage it was apparent that a lot of them are busy with their own final projects. My only other option is Curtis Riley but only because it is late in the game and I know of his ability as musician. Luckily he agreed and we met today in Ellen Terry Midi Recording Studio. Several days before, I sent him some examples from films that I was looking for; predominately synths and piano. For the music I don’t want anything to elaborate or fancy to draw the audience away from the dialogue and imagery as that is more important.

Using the rough cut as a reference, I sat down and discussed exactly what it was I was looking for for each part of the film. Curtis interpreted what I had asked for and by the end of the day had composed a selection of appropriate music that helped set the mood of the film as well as the tone. As asked for, the music was simplistic; in most cases only two instruments were used, a synth and piano. I was extremely with what had been produced and I can’t thank him enough.

What a kerfuffle this has been. I wasted a considerable time at Staples on Monday in an effort to print 4 A3 sized prints. I visited Staples twice, the first time with four 300mb TIFF files. These took ages to loaded up onto the computer and once they did they refused to print. Why? Who knows. This time wasted engagement took over an hour of my morning up and I went home to downgrade to JPEG which I wasn’t too happy about but I need prints produced so I returned again with little lucky. Although this time around, in just over 40 minutes they managed to print one image which as a JPEG didn’t look to bad. Another 30 minutes was spent trying desperately to print off the others but the computer was having none of it. I’ve got to give the staff credit though, they tried their damn hardest to sort out the problem which unfortunately couldn’t be fixed.

I therefore headed to the Graham Sutherland Print Bureau and filled out the relevant forms. Lovely Jubbly? No way Jose. When reading through the form it asked me to change the colour settings which I did in order to get the best possible prints. It didn’t look any different on my computer screen but I submitted it anyway. Upon receiving the image I wasn’t surprised considering what had happened. The photographs, printed on semi-gloss paper had a weird matte effect and the colours were well off. Man I am pissed. There is no time left to print anymore photographs due to the Graham Sutherland’s turn around and to be honest Staples is probably going to produce the same results as Monday. Realistically, this should have been done weeks ago in case this happened and I knew this. Why I didn’t do it though is another question and one I can vaguely answer. It is becoming all to evident that DeeJay and I bit off more than we could chew.

It is therefore best we discard the Photography Prints as part of our main body of work. I do not want to waste anymore time trying to get prints sorted as it may hinder the rest of the project.

The Interim Critique wasn’t as help as I’d liked. After presenting a two-minute clip of our film, not many people wished to pass judgement about it, whether it was good or bad but this was the case for most people’s presentations. Joanne raised the relevant point of using voice actors which rather stupidly hadn’t occurred to me until today. As Curtis was in the film, we used his voice etc and I could see where she was coming from. The voice work is OK but nothing impressive. Rather embarrassingly I had to use my voice for the bar tender as the initially recording got corrupted when I edited it on Monday.

Everyone, even Steve agreed on the aesthetics of the pictures, suggesting that they were beautiful and worked well which was a huge sigh of relief because that is what we needed. If people had hated I don’t know what I would have done.

I also got to see an almost final cut of Qubul the film I helped Alam, Curtis, Luke and Az with. Personally I thought the film was amazing and compared to the other films I saw, theirs certainly stand out as the best by a mile. This was impression I received when filming with them; they all gel together, they are passionate, they are all organised and they all got the job done to an amazing standard. There are a few issue that George raised about the film feeling claustrophobic which I agreed with. I wouldn’t say this lets the film down in any way and the quality of the film has set the bar very high. I anticipate any film that challenges theirs.

Generally a positive crit but then again there wasn’t much feedback from my peers. I look forward to Friday’s screening.
